GOVERNMENT has committed itself to the agreement reached by nations at the climate change summit held in Copenhagen, Denmark, in December last year.
Environment and Tourism Minister Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah on Friday sent a letter to Yvo de Boer, Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in New York.
In the letter the Minister requested De Boer to include Namibia on the list of those countries supporting the Copenhagen Accord.
Countries which did not want to sign the non-binding accord in Copenhagen had until Sunday, January 31 to indicate whether they would commit to the climate goals or not.
"The Namibian Government is committed to support the UNFCCC and the international community in engaging in negotiations that will lead to a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions on a long-term basis," the Minister said in the letter.
"Namibia also supports the working groups to finalise the legally binding instrument on the long-term co-operative action and the Kyoto Protocol."
In her letter to the UNFCCC, a copy of which was found on the Internet, the Minister added that Namibia would define plans and strategies for projects in the field of renewable energies and submit them to the UNFCCC.
Industrialised nations in Copenhagen promised billions of US dollars to developing countries who suffer from the consequences of climate change caused by these countries and Namibia will also benefit from the mitigation funds.
