Nigeria: Benin Monarch Advocates Recovery of Artifacts

Benin — Benin Monarch, Omo N'Oba N'Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Erediauwa, has called on the management of National Commission for Museum and Monument (NCMM) to ensure that Benin's lost artifacts are recovered.

Oba of Benin, who stated this during a courtesy visit to his palace by the Director General of NCMM, Mallam Abdallah Usman, charged him to ensure that the stolen artifacts were recovered and protected to ensure that the monument that shows the cultural heritage is kept for the preservation of the Benin history.

While expressing dissatisfaction over the demolition of some monuments in the museum, the Oba, however, called on the director to ensure that the demolition was corrected.

Besides, Usman, who intimated the Oba of his plans to get the stolen artifacts back, noted that in the last few years, the National Commission for Museum and Monument had to grapple with a number of challenges, from dilapidated structures to dearth of equipment and poor facilities.
