Akure — Ondo State government has warned building developers to stop erecting structures on water courses to check incessant flooding being experienced in some areas.
The Commissioner for Environment and Mineral Resources, Chief Omolebi Adepiti, gave the warning when he visited Ore in Odigbo Local Government Area of the state to ascertain the level of work done in preparation for the commencement of the beautification project of the town. He pointed out that Ore, being a commercial nerve centre in the state, must be given a facelift to attract more investors for an enhanced industrial development.
Adepiti said going by the volume of waste being generated in the town; environmental sanitation exercise should not be a monthly affair but should be done daily so as to make the town very clean and attractive to guarantee healthy living.
The commissioner, however, promised to provide more waste bins and ensure a regular evacuation of wastes through waste disposal vehicles in the commercial town, but solicited their full support towards making the proposed beautification project successful.
He assured them that government would not relent in its efforts at making Ore a millennium city by expediting action on the construction of fly-over and the building of an industrial park for the town.
Also, the Olore of Ore, Oba Adeolu Olatomide, who commended the present administration for its efforts at developing the state, pledged his people's cooperation and appealed that more waste disposal vehicles be provided as the old ones are nearly grounded.
Meanwhile Adepiti has continued his sanitary inspection of Akure Township by visiting Mojere Market and Orita-Obele junction.
At Mojere market in Ilesa Motor Park, the commissioner, who personally led the traders in a cleaning exercise, appealed to them to make clearing and cleaning of their environment a daily exercise.
He posited that if people should engage in regular cleaning of their environment, they would save themselves from avoidable diseases that are occasioned by dirty environment.
Adepiti, who expressed displeasure over the untidy state of the market, advised the traders to put waste bins in their various shops.
Chairman, Goat Sellers Association at Mojere Market, Alhaji Murtala Abolaji, said the market lacked toilet facilities and appealed to the government to assist them in this regard.
Abolaji explained that they had set aside a day for environmental sanitation in the market, adding that buying and selling are always put on hold during the exercise to pave the way for full participation of all traders.
At Orita-Obele junction, the commissioner thanked the commercial motorcyclists for clearing the drainages in the area and urged them to keep up the good act, stressing that if people cultivate the habit of clearing the drainages and waterways, the annual flooding and its negative effects on buildings and infrastructure would be minimized.
