Freetown — Construction work on the 200-meter road and drainage along Berry Street will be completed this week.
Speaking to Concord Times, the Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA) contractor for the drainage, Mohamed Abdul Kamara said the road and drainage would be ready by Saturday if only the second tranche of payment is made available early this week.
Kamara said the construction of the Berry Street drainage leading to Fourah Bay College is part of government's plan to improve the drainage system in the city.
However, drivers, motor bike riders, traders and residents along Berry Street have pleaded with the SLRA to extend the drainage construction to Circular Road, as according to them overflow of water from the hills of Fourah Bay College to Berry Street would cause flooding on the road should they be left out..
Meanwhile, the residents have commended SLRA for the work, but also expressed concern over the mountain of earth placed along the Berry Street, which they said is causing traffic congestion.
They further urged the contractor to cover the reconstructed drainage with slabs to prevent pedestrians from falling into them.
