Namibia: Discipline Required of Uniformed Staff

SAFETY and Security Minister Nickey Iyambo has promised his staff that he will continue pushing to improve their conditions of service.

Addressing staff of the Police and Prisons Service yesterday, Iyambo said he would not rest until they get improved housing, uniforms, equipment, vehicles and salaries.

He said staff were expected to bring their side by taking good care of State property.

Iyambo said reckless and negligent driving of Government cars would be punished.

"We cannot afford to lose vehicles due to reckless or malicious and criminal conduct or misuse by a few members whose attitude contributes to the destruction of Government property," he said, adding that 198 new cars had been bought for the Police and 24 for the Prison Service.

He said new uniforms also had been acquired and he did not want to see "creased, dirty or ragged-looking" uniforms on officers.

Iyambo called upon Permanent Secretary Peter Mwatile, Police Chief Sebastian Ndeitunga and Commissioner of Prisons Evaristus Shikongo to work hard to start implementing the strategic plan for 2009 to 2014.

Both Iyambo and Ndeitunga commended the Police for a job well done during the elections last year.

Iyambo said the Police succeeded in ensuring that the country's internal security was preserved.
