Lagos — FC Metz technical director Joël Muller has told Al Heddaf that he is convinced that the Algerian national team will qualify for the second round of the World Cup this summer by finishing behind England in a group that also includes the United States and Slovenia.
"There's no reason why things can't turn in Algeria's favor. All you have to do is compare the rosters. Your players are more complete than those of these two sides [Slovenia and the USA]. Personally, I don't doubt for one instant that it will be Algeria that goes through with England to the second round," he explained before adding that guarding against overconfidence was crucial to achieve this goal.
Muller continued and said that he thought that the experience gained by the Fennecs during their African Cup of Nations campaign in Angola, where they finished in fourth place, would serve them well during South Africa 2010. Meanwhile, he also mentioned that he was hoping for an upset over England even though he thinks it's a long shot.
"First of all, the English aim to be World Champions and they are capable of it. They're formidable. However, in football there are surprises that can bring up unexpected results. Even though it will be difficult, Algeria are capable of producing the match they need," he said.
"Everyone remembers France's defeat against Senegal in 2002. I hope with all my heart that we can relive that same scenario during the next England-Algeria matchup."
