The robbers reportedly made away with money from the National Social Insurance at Mile 17.
Work resumed at the National Social Insurance (CNPS) Buea on February 12, 2010 after men of the underworld gained access into the Centre and stole some FCFA 800.000. The Chief of Centre, Aristide Mouadoume, explained that blood and shattered window and door panes offered an awful scene on February 11, 2010 in the morning when the investigating officers were called to witness the incident.
Mouadoume said the 10 guards who were wounded and subdued reported that some 20 armed robbers invaded the place by 2p.m February 11th after digging a hole from the rear of the fence surrounding the structure. He said some four offices were looted, office documents littered all over on the floor, the "strong room" visited but the thieves could neither break nor carry away the money safe. The Chief of Centre explained that since February 2009 when the CNPS Buea moved to their new site at Mile 17, they engaged the services of NOJEMA Sarl private security based in Douala. Some CFA 1.5 million is paid to the company monthly for.
Many have raised the question as to why such a big and important institution like the CNPS could not be guarded by either the Gendarmerie or the Police. However, the NOJEMA guards told the Chief of Centre that the thieves who spoke in pidgin operated for some two hours. The lone guard who was said to have hidden in one of the numerous rooms could not get to his phone to communicate to the Forces of Law and Order.
