Nigeria: Fulani Herdsmen Attack Berom's Village

Jos — Report of silent reprisal attacks in parts of Plateau State is growing by the day as some Fulani herdsmen are reported to have unleashed violent havoc on a Berom tribe village, in Riyom Local Government of the state with one person feared killed.

Also, farms produce worth millions of naira were destroyed in the Jol village last weekend, following a retaliatory attack suspected to have been carried out by the Fulani herdsmen.

The chairman of the local government, Prince Simon Mwodkon who confirmed the incident shortly after visiting the affected areas described the attack as horrible and said that the people in the eastern parts of the area were now living in fear.

According to him, the situation has now made it difficult for the inhabitants because of the refusal of the Fulani community leaders to honour a reconciliation meeting summoned shortly after the Jos crisis.

He said, "Even if you are aggrieved, you are supposed to come to a round table discussion, but by the time somebody refuses to attend, you know that definitely there is skeleton in the cupboard. So what has happened is unfortunate. I completely condemned that," he said.

Mwodkon said it was obvious that the local council lacks the required manpower and capacity to handle the escalating situation in the area and called on the Plateau State government to come to their help.

According to him, there was need for security agencies deployed to the area to alert their headquarters on strange happening, "so that we could have the clear picture of what is on the ground because when we talk they will say the are at it again."

He appealed to the Fulani herdsmen in the area to burry their hatchets.

Also speaking on the development, the chairman of the Council Development Area, Mr Samuel Iliya said since the Fulani people gave them an ultimatum over the missing of their cows in the area they were having a sleepless nights over fear of retaliation by the herdsmen in the area.

'Since the Jos crisis, my people have been having sleepless nights they are now being evacuated because there is no more peace in the area. And now with this situation that occurred last night where we lost a young and promising boy.

Now we are no safer. How can somebody in his father's land be evacuated. Where do we go now? So what I'm saying is that security men should come to our aid if not so, we will be force to leave our land to a total strangers," he said

When contacted the Police Public Relations Officer, Muhammed Lerama said he was in Kaduna, at the time of the clash.
