Zimbabwe: Cholera Resurfaces, One Death Reported

Harare — Cholera has resurfaced in some parts of Zimbabwe, claiming one life and affecting more than 60 people in seven districts.

One of the cases was reported in Harare's high-density suburb of Kuwadzana. The last cholera cases were recorded four weeks ago.

The outbreak, which started on February 4, has seen 15 confirmed and 49 suspected cases in Beitbridge, Chiredzi, Mwenezi, Masvingo, Harare, Chivi and Mt Darwin.

Twenty-five of the suspected cases were recorded in Chiredzi while another 16 cases were recorded in Beitbridge. The single death was recorded in Masvingo where the victim died after admission to hospital.

In Harare, one case was reported in Kuwadzana 3 and the person has since been treated.

Two other suspected cases in Harare tested negative.

In Kuwadzana, community health workers have started awareness campaigns on cholera prevention and treatment. Most parts of Harare are experiencing managed water rationing.

According to the Cholera Command and Control Centre established at the height of a vicious outbreak last year, investigations were ongoing to establish the cause of the nine deaths in Mwenezi and Beitbridge.

Officials from the Health Ministry and World Health Organisation co-chair the command centre.

"There was no evidence to link the deaths to cholera; however the cases were diarrhoea-related," reads the latest epidemiological report from the command centre.

The nine deaths were reported in Lapache, Umbono and Nyahombe communal lands and have since been linked to suspected food poisoning.
