South Africa: Backlog - Extra R1 Billion to Step Up Housing Delivery

Johannesburg — Housing came under the spotlight in Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan's budget speech yesterday with an additional R1bn being allocated to integrated housing and human settlement development to ensure accelerated housing delivery.

"The human settlements grant is one of the faster growing items in the budget. Supported by rising spending on water and sanitation, these investments are critical to reshaping our townships, cities, informal settlements and rural areas," Gordhan said. Consolidated spending on housing, water services and community amenities amounted to R81,6 bn in 2009- 10, projected to ris e to R93,2 bn in 2010 -11.
