Ethiopia: Couple Sentenced With Rigorous Imprisonment for Corruption

A husband and wife duo involved in a corruption scheme involving over half a million Birr were sentenced to 15 years and five years of rigorous imprisonment, respectively, on Thursday, February 18, 2010, by the Federal High Court First Instance Bench; the husband, who used to be an accountant and acting head of the Finance Department at the Federal Courts Judgment Execution Department also landed a 20,000 Br fine.

It all started with a court dispute involving two other people, Kitaw Meshesha and Almaz Ayele, who were involved in litigation over judgment execution in favour of Kitaw (money owed by the latter to the former). According to the court ruling, Almaz's property was sold to pay what she owed Kitaw, and the money that was left over, 549,609.92 Br was returned to her.
