Sierra Leone: Kargboro Land Dispute Resolved

Freetown — The people of Mobele and Tokpombu villages in the Kargboro chiefdom, Moyamba district recently heaved a sigh of relief and now live in peace after resolving a vexing land dispute.

The two villages have been apart over a piece of land for a very long time and after series of negotiations failed, the matter was transferred to one of the local courts. The court, which the people thought was the last resort, did not yield any dividend as millions of Leones were spent and community members were now flexing their muscles for possible attacks.

Last year, stakeholders in different sections thought that the two villages should continue to be apart because, according to them, any trouble that erupts will affect Kargboro chiefdom in particular and Sierra Leone as a whole. Therefore, series of meetings were held to withdraw the matter from court. The meetings centered on Fambul Tok's ways of resolving conflict and to the surprise of all, the matter was withdrawn and settled at family level.

In an interview with the section speaker of Yondu, Deen Williams, he said the whole community is now peaceful. "We are doing fine here. Most cases are now settled at family level," Williams stressed.
