Tanzania: Relocate Ngorongoro Maasai - Bunge Team

Ngorongoro — The Parliamentary Committee on Public Accounts has asked the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority to review its laws so as to relocate the Maasai community living in the middle of the park.

The committee under its chairperson Zitto Kabwe made the call during their tour to assess different projects that are implemented by NCAA upon which they found a large number of people and cattle inside the reserve.

"It's now a high time that NCAA management sat down and made recommendations on how the Parliament could change the law because the number of people and cattle have tremendously increased something that needs a very cautious decision regarding the situation to be made,"said Mr Kabwe.

Commenting on the matter, a committee member Dr Raphael Chegeni (Busega-CCM) said currently there were more than 60, 000 people with head of cattle in Ngorongoro which is way beyond the authorized 25,000 people.

NCAA board chairman Job Ndungai said NCAA had already started the process to change the Authority's laws but he quickly warned that any attempt to relocate people from the area would require consultations.

"I admit that there is no any national park or reserve in the world where people are allowed to live in and I am promising you that we will discuss the issue during board meetings," Ndungai said.

Meanwhile NCAA has set aside more than 5.156 in its 2009/2010 budget to fund different development projects as well as preserving the reserve.

The acting chief warder Chaddi Kiambile said sh200 million would be used to improve the Laetoli footsteps, sh300 million for creation of Nainokanoka secondary school while sh200 would be used to build a tourist lounge.

Mr Kiambile said Sh150m would be used to repair the roads inside the reserve while Sh185 would be used to supply water to all houses of reserve staffs and sh160 million would be used to purchase security gear.

Sh743 million would be used to improve residences of the people who were relocated to Oldonsambu from NCAA while the remaining Sh40 million would be used to evaluate how an investment centre would be made.
