Zimbabwe: Gunners Face Mafunzo

Harare — GUNNERS' coach Darlington Dodo is not going to make any wholesale changes to the personnel but has hinted on a change of tactics when they meet FC Mafunzo of Zanzibar in the second leg of the preliminary round of the 2010 African Champions League at Rufaro tomorrow.

On yet another weekend of interesting clashes for local clubs, Lengthens are away in Madagascar where they defend a 2-1 lead against hosts AS Adema in the Caf Confederations Cup today while across the Southern African region, CAPS United with a 1-0 advantage, meet Mbabane Highlanders in Swaziland tomorrow.

Zimbabweans champions Gunners carry a 2-1 lead from the first leg in Dar Es Salaam two weeks ago while Mafunzo, who arrived in Zimbabwe on Thursday, are eager to overhaul the deficit.

Winners of this round will face crack Egyptian side and former champions Al Ahly in the first round on the weekend of March 13, 14 and 15.

Both Gunners and Mafunzo are making maiden appearances in this prestigious continental club competition after winning their respective national league champions for the first time.

Gunners held a training session at Rufaro yesterday and Dodo revealed that they could be welcoming back former Shooting Stars defensive rock Daniel Vheremu.

Vheremu missed the first leg because of an injury but he is back and could be a direct replacement for team skipper Trymore Mtisi who has an injured toe.

"I believe the team has a good balance. We are not going to change much except maybe bringing in Vheremu," said Dodo.

Former Monomotapa and Chapungu defender Asani Nhongo will have to wait a little longer before he can play while the same goes for winger Tapiwa Mangezi.

"Mtisi is out and so is Asani and Tapiwa because of injuries," said Dodo.

The former Devchem coach said he now has a little insight about Mafunzo and will make his game plan around the knowledge gained from the first leg.

"It was more difficult to plan for the first leg because we did not know anything about them.

"But now we have some knowledge of how they play and we will try to use our own tactics.

"I noticed from the first leg that Mafuzo want to play a fast game, using speed to attack.

"We managed to counter that by keeping possession and outclassing them," said Dodo.

He knows that the second leg will be different but he is ready for the challenge.

"In football, we have to plan and in this match I want to go out and attack.

"Now we have an idea of how they play," he said.

Dodo is still cautious ahead of the game and challenged his players to shake off a complacent attitude towards their opponents.

For Dodo, a place in the first round will also boost his credentials as the coach has lived in the shadow of Moses Chunga who had been his boss at Shooting Stars, CAPS United and Gunners.

Playing in the Champions League is the chance for Dodo to show that he is his own man and Gunners need to emulate Monomotapa who reached the mini-league in their debut campaign.

Al-Ahly are a formidable opponent in the first round but Gunners have to deal with Mafunzo tomorrow before planning for the African giants.

Dodo is likely to retain Tafadzwa Dube in goals while employing Vheremu in central defence to partner Richard Khola if he passes a late fitness test or Carlington Nyadombo who replaced Mtisi in the first leg.

Qadr Amin could play in the left back position with Tinashe Malunga occupying the other side.

Elvis Meleka played as the holding midfielder in Tanzania with Ali Sadiki on the left side of midfield.

Former Eastern Lions man, Willard Katsande, could also join the fray and give support in attack alongside the underrated but influential David Rediyoni.

Rediyoni scored one of the goals while Norman Maroto, who was the lone striker up-front, weighed in with the other goal.

Maroto has recovered from the swollen leg that saw him struggling to finish the game in Tanzania.

However, it is Soccer Star of the Year Ramson Zhuwawo is will be expected to carve open the Mafunzo defence as Gunners seek to book their place in the first round.

But Mafunzo coach Shabaan Ramadhani has refused to be intimidated by Gunner's slight lead from the first leg.

He believes that if Gunners can win in Tanzania, then Mafunzo can also win in Zimbabwe.

"We will do our best to qualify for the next round," said Ramadhani.

Ramadhani, a former Zanzibar striker who has been with Mafunzo for two seasons now, is aware of the lack of experience in his side in such a competition.

But so are Gunners.

Mafunzo will be looking forward to Shabaan Bakari, Hajji Kombo and goalkeeper Ali Mwandini to help them claw back into contention.

Said Mussa and Sadik Habib are some of the players expected to lead Mafunzo's cause.

Ramadhani said he will draw some of his inspiration from President Mugabe.

"It's good for me to be here in Zimbabwe.

"I admire President Mugabe and my friends in the mainland and Zanzibar always call me to watch him on television especially that interview with CNN's Christine Amanpur.

"And the way he speaks English, ah! It's good English."

Well, for Mafunzo, the battle is just a few hours away and whether they can take something away from this one, only time will tell.

Gunners will be hoping to get more fans to back their cause after just a few supporters came to Rufaro to watch Lengthens in their Confederations Cup tie two weeks ago.
