Liberia: Bar's Law and Order Conference Ends in Lawlessness

AllAfrica aggregates reports from Africa's news media. This is an article from the Liberian press. It is not a report by AllAfrica.

Several lawyers and judges who left Monrovia last weekend to attend their annual conference in Voinjama, Lofa County, under the theme: "law and order', found themselves caught in lawlessness with the conference cancelled.

"They chased us and broke our windshields", one top lawyer and former Justice Minister told this paper in a telephone call from the town under siege.

Others said they had to run for cover while others hastily left the town.

Voinjama was a prime contested town during the war and the hallmarks of the conflict are still visible around the town. The conference was meant to instill a sense of law and order as Lofa County and the country as a whole slowly puts the war behind.

"This was a reminder that there is a lot to be done", one disappointed lawyer said.

How interesting? Lawyers in town and were eye witnesses to what occured in Lofa. Wow!wow!!! This was the best time for them to see how seriously, things need to change in the way Liberians handle greviances. Not in mob justice but, through the Courts and Law inforcers. The ministry of justice needs to be more effective in trying cases of such proportion, so that they are not repeated again. Atleast, we were not the only people 285 miles and 1,950 ft above Capital hill, Monrovia that witness this. Monrovia also had their representatives here to see what really did happened.

I stand second in motion to your claim Sir that the lawmakers of liberia really need to be more proactive not only in tracking down and penalizing criminals, but also straightening the legal system if we really want to recover from the 14 years civil war.
