The Senate yesterday condemned last week's maiming of passengers of a luxury bus plying the Lagos-Benin highway by armed robbers.
In a vote of no confidence in both the Nigeria Police and the Senate Committee on Police Affairs, the Senate got cracking with the constitution of an ad-hoc committee to investigate what it decribed as a "beastly and grossly inhuman act."
To probe police capability to check crime
Whilst it tasked the Inspector General of Police to fish out the perpetrators of what many of them described as a heinous crime, the Senator Patrick Osakwe led ad-hoc committee was charged to investigate the capability of the Police to check such dastardly acts.
The ad-hoc committee is to assess the manpower, training and equipment capacities of the Police against the background of budgetary provisions to the Police in the last few years.
The Senate outrage was upon a motion presented by Senator Ayogu Eze (PDP, Enugu North) drawing its attention to last week's robbery on the Lagos-Benin expressway where it was alleged that the robbers raped and ordered the driver of the luxury bus conveying the passengers to crush passengers that did not have money.
The outrage of the senators was summarized by the President of the Senate, Senator David Mark who described the unidentified driver of the bus as the biggest criminal in the whole episode for his willingness to crush his passengers instead of giving up his life.
Introducing the motion yesterday, Senator Eze said the incident last Tuesday, 25 February 2010 was one of the most horrifying acts of armed banditry in the nation's history.
Mark expresses worry over robbers' behavoiur
He expressed worry at the "behaviour of a deranged robbery gang, that after robbing a luxury bus on the Benin- Lagos expressway, commanded those who had nothing on them to lie face downwards and commanded the driver of the bus at gun point to run over them several times."
He further expressed concern that the "horrendous act is the height of the decline of security in the country, but more importantly is a reflection of the sorry state of our psyche as a nation and equally aware that robbery has stubbornly refused to go away in our land as is evident by incidents in many parts of the country."

The driver is just as brave as the Senators and all of the other people in the country who have "chop" the funds which was allocated to the police, as well as to the officers in the police force conspiracy. These same politicians, the 10%ers share in the crime of lining their pockets, at the cost of the security and lives of the passengers of the country. Where there is no law there is a country left to fend for their selves. All citizens must now arm themselves, defend what is very precious to them, their lives! Self-preservation is first law of nature.
