The House of Representatives ad-hoc Committee on the review of the constitution will submit its report this week.
Chairman of the committee and Deputy Speaker Rep Usman Bayero Nafada (PDP, Gombe State) said the committee has concluded a two-day retreat in Kaduna and will submit its report to the House on the draft review in the next few days.
The committee concluded work on major issues including the independent candidacy in elections, succession between the president and vice President and governors and their deputies, independence of INEC and appointment of its chairman and relevant sections that will strengthen the democratic process.
He said because of the primacy of the Electoral Act in the entrenchment of credible elections, the committee needed a little time to be thorough and therefore deferred some decisions to enable it remove all obstacles that may impede credible elections in 2011 and beyond.
He however said the submission of the report will have to wait for a final resolution on the electoral Act to be decided upon by the committee.
It would be recalled that Rep Nafada had recently said the committee would remove all issues bordering on the Electoral Act from the constitution and treat them separately.
A post-retreat dinner was held weekend for the committee by the Governor Namadi Sambo at the Government House in Kaduna. Governor Sambo expressed confidence in the committee's ability to produce a popular document.
