Sierra Leone: Education Minister Hands Over Rehabilitated Schools

Freetown — Minister of education, youth and sports has handed over 10 rehabilitated primary and junior secondary schools, including the Regent Square Municipal School, to the respective school authorities.

Permanent secretary in the ministry of education, Sheku AT Tamu said the ministry was faced with a daunting task of rehabilitating the 10 schools. He said they were very thankful to the Africa Development Bank (ADB) and the World Bank for their support in rehabilitating the schools.

"The bulk of the funds were made possible through the SABABU education project. The project is also providing furniture and medical facilities for students," he said. According to the permanent secretary, the SABABU project is presently rebuilding some 291 primary schools, 101 secondary schools and 8 technical and vocational institutions.

Director of SABABU education project in the ministry of education, Mrs. YN Gibrill said the project was founded by the World Bank and the Africa Development Bank, adding that scheme is not only meant to address the problem of schools in Sierra Leone but also to improve the education system as well.

Minister of education, youth and sports, Dr. Minkailu Bah urged school authorities and pupils to make good use of the structures. He said the ministry would provide books for each pupil, while encouraging parents to send their children to school to acquire quality education. "My ministry is determined to implement a new education sector plan," he revealed.
