Freetown — Head of presentation and prosecution at the Complainants, Discipline and Internal Investigation Department of the Sierra Leone Police (CDIID) has disclosed that a total of 22 personnel of the force were dismissed in 2009.
Detective inspector Brima Kanneh told Concord Times that the reason for the dismissal of the officers was because of their involvement in robbery, corrupt practices and the cocaine saga among others.
"The tribunal of the SLP dismissed 22 police officers countrywide. The officers were investigated and prosecuted. The rank of those that were dismissed ranges from inspector right down to constable," he said.
Kanneh said a total of 1,281 cases were reported to the CDIID against police officers countrywide in 2009, adding, "It was out of these reported cases that led to the dismissal of the 22 police officers."
Detective inspector Kanneh noted that 56 officers were suspended indefinitely, 110 given warning letters, 5 demoted, informal resolutions 300 and correction training (punishment) 56.
"We currently have a total of 408 matters under investigation. The statistics for 2009 is for countrywide and not Freetown alone," he revealed.
