Sierra Leone: Fambul Tok Goes Online

Freetown — Fambul Tok, a community-owned organisation, yesterday launched its website 'fambultok.org', where the group's executive director John Caulker told journalists that the organisation was a gift from Sierra Leone to the rest of the world as it has assumed international status.

Making reference to the organisation's achievements over the years, Mr. Caulker said they had moved from corporate implementation to an international level, noting that Fambul Tok Sierra Leone will be the international headquarters for the Fambul Tok programme.

The organization, he said, is now serving as a model for post-war countries and countries that had suffered severe political conflicts, including Liberia, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Kenya, Sudan and South Africa. He disclosed ongoing plans to help innovate and implement the Fambul Tok programme in these countries, as they too had gone through brutal wars and political violence.

On the establishment of the website, Caulker revealed that the site would help showcase all the work and activities of the organization, especially in the provinces of Kono, Kailahun, Moyamba and Koinadugu; areas they are currently operating.

He went on to state that after the war a lot was done on disarmament and rehabilitation and forgetting to heal the trauma of those affected by the war. Fambul Tok, he said, is meeting communities through the district councils, creating a level ground for people to say what had happened to them during the war and what perpetrators did, and then ask for forgiveness, peace and reconciliation.

He said they have worked in 61 sections in the four provinces of the country and that 144 women had testified and told community members what happened to them in the past and had forgiven those who wronged them with the help of women support groups to ensure that those women who testified do not suffer stigmatization.
