Freetown — Sierra Leone and FC Groningen defender, Gibril Sankoh aka 'Barrel' has seen his three-match ban reduced to two matches by the disciplinary committee of the Royal Netherlands Football Association.
After several protests by his club, the Sierra Leonean defender saw his penalty being reduced over the weekend. Barrel was given a three-match ban after the referee showed him a red card for a rough challenge during Groningen's 4-3 loss to Heracles Almelo. The defender was to sit for two machetes but arbitrator, Reinold Wiedemeijer increased the ban.
However, Groningen officials and the player saw the penalty as a very harsh decision and on appeal, the Royal Netherlands Football Association disciplinary committee reviewed the match tape, and then reduced the player's punishment. The suspension will see the defender watch from the gallery his club's league matches against RKC Waalwijk, Feyenoord and Ron Jans.
Barrel will make his return to the pitch in FC Groningen's match against VVV Venlo.
