Cameroon: Burial of Christian Bongwa - President Biya Honours A Patriot

Head of State's Representative at funeral, Atanga Nji Paul says he was a committed servant of the nation.

Late Christian Songwe Bongwa, former Minister Delegate at the Presidency incharge of Administrative Reforms at the State control and Minister of Transport was buried in his native Mendankwe on March 6, 2010 with President Paul Biya's condolence message saluting the man who dedicated his life to the service of the nation as a true patriot. The illustrious son of the nation was recognized for selflessness add decorated posthumously as the Grand Officer of the National Order of Valour by the Head of State's personal Representative, Minister Atanga Nji Paul. The funeral service at the Bamenda metropolitan Cathedral was proceeded by military honours for the late man who was acclaimed by all as generous, caring and a dedicated Christian and Prince of Mendankwe. I his eulogy, Minister Atanga Nji Paul said late Christian Bongwa was a mentor an a father whose selfless services to the nation earned him several national and international honours.

The church according to Archbishop Cornelius Fontem Esua who presided the funeral mass remembered late Christian Bongwa for charity works. It emerged from the homily that he constructed churches and provided benches for faithfuls. Emmanuel Songwe Bongwa, a son on behalf of the family told mourners that their father took ill on January 25,2010 and died on February 12,2010 after 86 years of a full and fulfilled life. He is said to have kept standards in public and family life and paid an unflagging attention to religious matters. Emmanuel Songwe Bongwa thanked the Head of State for standing by the Bongwa family in their moment of grief.

Born on January 3rd, 1924 late Christian Songwe Bongwa first rose to prominence as the Pioneer Director of Community Development in 1962. He was later appointed Permanent Secretary in the then Ministry of Cooperative and Community Development. He also served the nation as the Director of Cabinet at the Vice Presidency of the Federal Republic of Cameroon, State Inspector, Minister Delegate at the Presidency incharge of Administrative Reforms and State Control, Minister of Transport and Minister Delegate at the Presidency in charge of Relations with the Assembly. The nation buried Christian Bongwa who is survived of a wife, several children, grand children and great grand children. Governor Abakar Ahamat, North West elite like, Rt Hon. Achidi Achu, Ama Tutu Muna, Ngafeeson Emmanuel, Ni John Fru Ndi, friends and relatives were among the lot that filed out to bury the great son of the land.
