Sierra Leone: Swasal Elects New Executive

Freetown — The Sports Writers Association of Sierra Leone, SWASAL Saturday elected a new executive that will run the affairs of the association in the next two years.

Before announcing the winners, electoral commissioner of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), Ransford SC Wright advised the newly elected executive to update the list of members at both regional and national levels.

Wright said the commission did not conduct elections in the southern, eastern and northern regions because those areas did not meet the constitutional requirement set out in Article 15 of the 2009 revised SWASAL constitution.

The constitution reads: "There shall be branches of SWASAL in each of the three regions of Sierra Leone provided that at least 10 full members of SWASAL reside and work in that region."

However, the commissioner gave the new executive a deadline of three months to update the regional bodies before they can organise another election.

Meanwhile, Wright went further to declare the nominated candidates as winners of the national body after they all went unopposed.

According to the electoral commissioner, the seven nominated candidates were declared winners after the commission did not receive any formal petition from any registered SWASAL member against their candidacy; also they were all unopposed in their respective positions.

The newly elected Secretary General of the association, Frank Cole urged the entire membership to rely on them as they will definitely deliver what they had promised during the campaign period.
