Sierra Leone: Coopi Deplores Violence Against Women

Freetown — Country representative of Cooperazione Internazionale (COOPI) has said that violations against women and children in Kono and the Western Area need urgent attention by the relevant stakeholders to help combat the menace.

Speaking at the launching of the 'community based prevention and response to women and children's rights violation in Kono and Western Area' programme at the Hill Valley hotel, Signal Hill in Freetown, Marco Serena said his organization has a heavy task ahead in addressing violations against women and children within the two respective communities, noting that the economic and social rights of Sierra Leone mainly depend on women and children.

He said the launching of the project was to give pride to the social responses, thanking the European Union for their relentless efforts in funding the project.

The chairman of the program, human rights commissioner Yasmin Jusu Sheriff commended COOPI and its partners for realizing the dream of women and children by speaking out against all forms of violations in Kono and the Western Area.

According to her, human rights violation against children was the order of the day in Kono district, a development she said has made many human rights groups to focus their attention on the district. "We must work together to ensure the rights of women and children are respected," she urged.

Representative from the ministry of social welfare, gender and children's affairs, Mabinti Mansaray said the ministry was grateful to the European Community for complementing the work of the government of Sierra Leone.

Sierra Leone need to adapt a system or regulation that is partner with our cultures, traditions, society, and civilian awarness. Meaning, analyzing the turbulances that are occuring against our mothers, wives, sisters, daughters and children in such a way that even the least or uneducated villager will understand of how bad brutality is. Therefore, our law makers need to be very sensitive and careful of how words are worded. We need to follow partern base on our Africa society that works, not to imitate or copy other cultures that have systematicaly destroy us for centuries. Africa cultures are one of thee most biblical cultures in history - therefore, we MUST NOT LOOSE THEM. God Bless Africa.
