Nigeria: N6.5 Billion Scam - Court Grants Austrian Medical Leave Abroad

Abuja — An Austrian, Mr. George Eder, whose company was used to perpetuate the alleged N6.5bn fraud in the Nigerian aviation ministry in 2006, was yesterday granted 40 days by an Abuja high court, to travel abroad for medical treatment.

Mr. Eder who was arraigned on 19 October 2007, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, is the Managing Director of Avsatel Communication Ltd, a company that was awarded the controversial safe tower project contract by erstwhile aviation Minister, Prof. Babalola Borishade.

He had earlier admitted to the anti-graft agency under interrogation, that he expended a total of 300,000 Euros organizing foreign trips for top management staff of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, NAMA and the Aviation ministry, before he was awarded the contract in 2006.

Justice Sadiq Umar who is presiding over his trial, yesterday, granted him leave to travel to Vienna, Austria, after it was proved that he has a deteriorating heart condition which his physician said may result to sudden death if not properly handled.
