South Africa: Calm Restored to Mamelodi

Pretoria — Calm has been restored to Mamelodi East following protests that started on Monday, says Gauteng police.

"The situation is now calm, it is quiet although there is still police presence," Captain Johannes Maheso told BuaNews on Wednesday.

This after protests began on Monday night that resulted in the barricading of some roads with rocks and burning tyres. This led to delays in people getting to their places of work.

"Some of the barricades have since been removed though a couple of rocks still remain," said Maheso.

On Monday, four people were arrested for public violence while some community members held a meeting with City of Tshwane officials.

Police who were called to the scene were also pelted with stones.
