Nigeria: Gunmen Kill Two Nollywood Stars

Benin — Two Edo State Nollywood stars were late Tuesday killed in Benin by gunmen suspected to be hired killers.Mr Erhauyi Ogbeide a.k.a Ukeke and Eghosa Idehen a.k.a Erejiro were killed at the home of Ukeke's father-in-law located at 39, Ore-Oghene Street in Benin at about 8pm.

They were said to be coming from a location in a community (Iguomo) where they had gone to shoot a film soon to be released.

The killers, who may have been on their trail, arrived at the house about an hour after they got there. The five killers were said to have made straight for the sitting room where the actors and their host were meeting.

They shot Ukeke twice at close range while Erejiro who had escaped into a bathroom was also shot at close range where he hid.

Ukeke and Erejiro's host simply referred to as Chief Olaye, was also shot by the bandits at the mouth before making away with handsets of the victims in a Toyota Camry car they had parked outside. Chief Olaye is now receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in Benin.

The Public Relations Officer of the Edo State Police Command ASP Peter Ogboi who confirmed the incident said the state commissioner of Police had directed the Criminal Investigation Department to take over the case.

What is happening in Nigeria and all of Africa today can be avoided, if African leaders can take the high road and lead by example. Educate the public both intellectually, morally and spiritually. Money is not everything ,but it helps to take care of few needs . It's just unfortnate since independence in 1960, nothing has improved in Nigeria. No electricity for the masses, unless you're rich enough to own a generator, no frequent running water, roads are bad, nothing moves unless you can afford to bribe somebody. It is a shame that Nigeria been one of the richest country in West Africa, it makes you wonder where does all the oil revenue disappear to. I suppose to banks in Switzerland...!! Those so called people running the country, continue to milk the system dry, whilst the ordinary man in the street does not have a look in. No wonder the country is in a complete mess. Why build a so capital in Abuja when Lagos looks like a shanty town. The first port of call when you arrive in Nigeria is Lagos, and what do you see when you leave the airport is a complete disgrace. At the airport through immigration, you are asked the odd loose change by workers, who presumably have not been paid as it happens in some casesi.e. like frontline workers, teachers, nurses, etc, etc. And this is one of the reasons why we have armrobbers everywhere - nowhere is safe to travel. What a complete disgrace, not only it is a disgrace, it is totally disgusting. You get promises year in year out since 1960, nothing seems to change.

I do sincerely hope attitudes change sooner rather than later, or else am afraid that there will soon be discontent in the country, unless the wealth is spread and give people jobs.

I can go on and on, but regrettably, I've to stop.

    Cheers

    A disgruntled Nigerian living abroad
