Tanzania: Maximo to Revel Chan Squad

Dar Es Salaam — TAIFA Stars coach Marcio Maximo is expected to reveal squad tomorrow ahead of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualification match against Somalia, which will take place in Dar es Salaam later this month.

However, Maximo hinted that he will retain the same squad, which played Uganda Cranes in the build-up match at the CCM Kirumba Stadium in Mwanza earlier this month, losing 3-2 to the Cecafa champions.

But the question of whether the Brazilian will change his mind and call in other few faces to bolster the squad ahead of Somalia's visit, or he would stick to his words, is still of interest to most soccer fans.

While, the answer to that question would come after Maximo's press conference this morning, the 'Daily News' tries to explore some weaknesses showed by the team during their last friendly match at the rock city, which should either be corrected during training sessions or through injecting new blood to the team before Somalia game.

It is unarguably understood that one of the Taifa Stars' weak links has been the goalkeeping department.

Though Maximo has never declared it publicly, he must be feeling headaches when making goalkeepers selections.

Shaaban Kado and Jackson Chove are the latest selections. The former, who has stepped up as the new starting keeper, stood between the posts against Cranes.

Although, he cannot directly be blamed for the goals Stars conceded, he failed to organize his defense, and at times he was nervous, probably due to inexperience.

Chove, the former Yanga goalkeeper has improved his performance at JKT Ruvu, demoting Shaban Dihile to bench but he is hardly expected to make any big impact at the national team.

Looking at the quality premier league goalkeepers, however, there are hardly outstanding shot-stoppers, a problem which goes together with the inconsistence of those who are sought as potential Tanzania One.

Juma Kaseja is debatably still the most fancied custodian in the country, but he is definitely out of Maximo's radar. Ivo Mapunda, who is back in the premier league after a spell with St George of Ethiopia, is another option but he does not look sharp enough to convince his return to the team.

Against Uganda the main problem, however, was the backline rather than a goalkeeper. From central defense to the full backs, Stars looked vulnerable.

While the form of left back Juma Jabu is worrying, Shadrack Nsajigwa is losing his usual fluency on the other end of the defense. It was no wonder that the coach took the decision to substitute him for Stephano Mwasika in the second half.

Mwasika is the available option on the left, while Salum Kanoni and Erasto Nyoni may cover on the right, but all have to raise their performance to become reliable fullbacks.

Otherwise, the presence of commanding fullbacks is a growing problem in the country.

In the absence of retired Salum Swedi, Maximo has said Kelvin Yondan will partner Nadir Haroub at the heart of Stars defense, but the new bond was easily broken by the Ugandans.

The midfield department, though unconvincing against the Cranes, it hardly that Maximo can make any change, because apart from Athuman Idd and Godfrey Bonny who are unlikely to be recalled by the Brazilian tactician after falling out of his favour, there are not many strong candidates out there.

Upfront, with all three premier league top scorers, Musa Hassan 'Mgosi', John Bocco, Mrisho Ngassa making the squad, alongside Jerson Tegete and youthful striker Mbwana Samatta, the door looks already closed, but Uhuru Seleman's impressive return after a prolonged spell out due to injury, could convince Maximo to call him back into the squad.

With lead strikers Tegete and Bocco and off-course, Mgosi, struggling to find their scoring boots, the team is now relying heavily on Ngasa's sensational scoring form. The presence of Uhuru can help reduce that burden on Ngasa.
