Cameroon: UNICEF to Assist Government in Mother, Child Protection

The UNICEF Regional Director is in Cameroon to discuss ways of managing mother and child mortality in the country.

The Minister of Public Health, André Mama Fouda, yesterday exchanged views with the visiting UNICEF Regional Director for West and Central Africa, Dr Gianfranco Rotigliano in his cabinet.

Speaking during the brief exchange at the minister's cabinet, the Dr Gianfranco Rotigliano said his organisation will work to assist the government of Cameroon in its policies towards maternal and child protection in the country.

For his part, the Minister of Public Health said despite efforts made by the government, maternal and infant mortality rates continue to be a source of worry. He said the visit of the UNICEF Regional Director comes at a time when Cameroon has revised its health sectoral strategy.

He said Cameroon is also out to meet the 2015 Millennium Development Goals. He expressed gratitude to UNICEF for the interest it shows for Cameroon as far as the protection of mother and child welfare is concerned.

André Mama Fouda assured the UNICEF Regional Director for Africa that all funds given towards mother and child welfare will be used accordingly. The UNICEF Regional Director is in Cameroon to discuss ways of managing mother and child mortality in the country.
