Nigeria: Goje Approves N210 Million to Gombe State Varsity

Lagos — Gombe State Governor, Muhammad Danjuma Goje, has approved payment of N210 million as quarterly subvention to Gombe State University, to cater for the new salary increase for university workers.

Vice Chancellor, Gombe State University, Prof. Abdullahi Mahadi, said this while briefing reporters, adding that by the new approval, the university's quarterly subvention was jacked up from N160 million naira to N210 million.

He commended Goje for his efforts at ensuring speedy educational development of the state, and said government has paid the backlog of salary arreas for the university with effect from July 2009, totaling N112 million.

According to him, when the University took off in 2004, the quarterly subvention was N30 million which was later increased to N160 million.

He expressed satisfaction with the way the state government is funding the university, adding that the university is operating as an independent entity, without any interference from government.
