Nigeria: LG Chief's Wife Flags Off Immunisation Campaign

Oji — The wife of Oji River Local Government Area Chairman in Enugu State, Mrs Njideka Onuzulike has flagged-off the second round of the 2010 National Immunization in Ehuhe autonomous community in Achi of the council.

She said at the flag-off, that the objective of the exercise was "to kick out Polio from our society because of its deadly nature."

Polio, Mrs. Onuzulike noted, is caused by Polio virus, which causes acute flacid paralysis in children, thereby creating an impairment condition for life. " This is the main reason why the WHO, UNICEF and the Federal Ministry of Health in partnership with NIPDS decided to eradicate polio in the country."

She emphasised that the local government had joined hands with other councils in the country in the kick out polio exercise by creating awareness across the length and breath of the country, cutting across towns and villages for the sake of the Nigerian child.

The immunisation meant for children under the age of five years was graced by the Royal Father of the community, Igwe John Egwuatu, who pledged for support for the success of the exercise.

The event was marked with the presentation of gifts to children and mothers, present.
