Nairobi — Gor Mahia, desperate for their first win and goal this season, travel west to a venue they consider "home" to face Sony Sugar, Nairobi City Stars entertain Chemelil Sugar at Hope Centre and high-riding Western Stima face a tricky tie against Sher Karuturi in the Kenyan Premier League on Saturday.
The Mathare United versus Posta Rangers tie at Nyayo National Stadium has been moved from Saturday to Sunday because of the unavailability of the venue.
A few seasons back, Sony's home ground, Awendo, was considered a fortress and visiting teams were lucky to come away with even a point.
The armour developed a chink when the sugar men lost no less than six first team players two years ago, although they are rebuilding under experienced Rishadi Shedu, assisted by Francis Baraza.
Backyard potency
Still, it is difficult to beat Sony at Awendo and a 7-2-4 win-draw-loss home record last season underlines their backyard potency. But Gor are little worried with geography and records, declaring they are going to Western for three points.
"We are going all to attack; going for a win. To us, playing in Awendo is not an away match; it is like playing at home. We have so many supporters there who will come to cheer us," Gor coach Gideon Ochieng' said.
Sony's Baraza however said the hosts will be wary of Gor, who have now gone scoreless for three matches.
"All teams are well prepared and you can lose at home and win away. There is no guarantee of winning at home. What we will need to do is to put away our chances," he said.
The two teams maintained their home superiority last season, Gor winning 2-1 in Nairobi and Sony returning the favour with a similar score in Awendo.
Close affair
Saturday's encounter is expected to be another close affair.
Gor will be without FISA Academy product Kevin Omondi, 19, who is down with malaria. But they welcome back big striker-turned-defender Christopher Wekesa and Cameroonian Baldwin Ngwa.
Misfiring Harambee Stars trialists George Odhiambo and Ibrahim Kitawi will spearhead the visitors' goal hunt.
Sony have four injury worries: Jack Omondi (hamstring), Dennis Onkangi (knee), Justin Monda (back) and Dennis Chweya (knee).
"We will need to make some adjustments but the team is gelling well and the young boys are learning to play at this top level," Baraza added.
The reliable Marwa Chamberi should lead Sony's attack, partnered by either Moses Arita, Hussein Puzo, ex-Tusker man Silas Aluvisya and Dodo Kayombo.
