Kenya: APS Arrested over Taxi Drivers' Killings

Nairobi — Seven Administration police officers allegedly involved in the killing of seven taxi drivers in Kawangware on Thursday morning have been interdicted and arrested as investigations into the circumstances leading to the incident began.

Internal Security minister George Saitoti on Friday said seven inquest files had been opened and several witnesses had recorded statements.

"In the meantime, all the seven Administration Police officers involved in the shooting have been apprehended and are assisting police with investigations.

"Any person, including police officers, suspected to have committed a crime in respect of the killings will be prosecuted," Prof Saitoti said.

But as the investigations continue, a boda boda operator who was among the three people seriously injured during the confrontation with taxi drivers on Thursday morning has been tracked by police to Kenyatta National Hospital.

The man, who is in critical condition, has not been identified but his colleagues and police were scheduled to visit him yesterday afternoon for identification.

His colleague, identified as George Kamau, was slashed by the attackers in the left shoulder.

Initial police reports indicate that the APs attached to Dagoretti DC's office responded to a distress call and found a group of 20 people attacking motorcyclists and intervened to stop the fight.

A confrontation ensued and the officers were forced to use their firearms in self defence.
