Nairobi — Four people charged with stealing Sh300 million from G4S security company were Friday released on a Sh20 million bond each with sureties in similar amount.
Prosecutor Obed Ndubi told senior principal magistrate Lillian Mutende that police had completed investigations, and that he did not object to their release on bonds.
Ms Matende then freed Kitui police station commandant Humphery Kabanga Njau and his brother Patrick Karanja, as well as two G4S employees -- Sylvester Mbisi Mutua and Humphery Wekesa Wanjala.
The accused had been in custody since they first appeared in court on Monday.
Ms Mutende ordered that Mr Mutua and Mr Wanjala be taken to Coast provincial general hospital to fill P3 (injury claim) forms.
On Monday, their defence counsel, Mr John Makau, asked that they be given the forms, saying that they had been injured by the police. The two are said to have stolen the money at Barclays Bank, Nkrumah Road branch in Mombasa.
Mr Wanjala denied an alternative count of stealing, dishonestly receiving or retaining the money.
He is alleged to have committed the offence at Mulundi village of Kitui District on March 5.
The police officer and his brother are charged with stealing Sh256.5 million in various currencies belonging to G4S.
They, jointly with others already in court, allegedly committed the offence on February 12 at Barclays Bank Nkrumah Road branch in Mombasa.
Mr Karanja denied that, at Githurai 45 in Nairobi, on March 6, he stole, dishonestly received or retained Sh685,000, knowing it to have been stolen or unlawfully obtained.
The prosecution said it intended to consolidate the case with another involving the theft of more than Sh313 million from G4S.
