Makerere — The Makerere University guild presidency has over the years been a hotly-contested seat many times attracting the major players in Uganda's politics. Records indicate that in the last 10 years, the ruling NRM has won the seat once - in 2008/9 when Robert Rutaro was the victor - with opposition parties having had a field day.
The outgoing president, Mr Robert Okware, belongs to the DP. Nine students are contesting for the seat, including one woman. But with elections now left with two days, the big question remains, who will have the last laugh? Below are their profiles.
Mr Dennis E. Adim, 23
Mr Adim is a second year student pursuing Bachelor of Arts in Economics. The former student of Busoga College Mwiri is a Uganda People's Congress member. He is advocating for improvement in the quality of services offered to students at the university.
Mr Dennis Pato, 23
Mr Pato is reading for a Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences and he is in his second year. The former student of Kyambogo College is an independent and is advocating for the students rights at the institution.
Mr John Teira, 23
Mr Teira is a third year law student. The former student of Busoga High School and the current chairperson of Busoga Dance Nseete is contesting for the guild presidency on the National Resistance Movement party ticket.
He is promising to ensure that Makerere University restores its past glory.
Ms Grace Ruto, 22
The second year student of Development Studies is the only female candidate. She is contesting for the guild presidency as an independent. She was denied opportunity to run on the DP ticket because she is not a Ugandan.
Mr Simon Kamau, 23
The third year Law student is an alumnus of St Lawrence Schools. Mr Kamau is contesting for the guild presidency as an Independent. He believes that candidates on party tickets cannot serve the students' interests.
Mr Shaban Senkubuge, 23
Mr Senkubuge is a second year student pursuing a bachelor's degree in education. He is the former speaker of Uganda Young Democrats Makerere Chapter. Last year, the university administration suspended him from the university on grounds that he spearheaded demonstrations at the institution. However, he appealed the decision and won. He is advocating for a ban on tuition fees increment.
Mr Otteran Tayebwa, 21
He is contesting for the guild presidency on the Forum for Democratic Change party ticket. He is a second year student pursuing a bachelor's degree in Information Technology. He is advocating for the harmonisation of tuition fees.
