Ondjiva — The deputy minister of Interior for Civil Protection and Fire Service, Eugénio Laborinho, over the weekend in Ondjiva, southern Cunene province, reiterated continued effort to secure assistance to the victims of the floods hitting the region.
The official was speaking to Angop at the end of a two-day visit to Cunene province. He said that the victims of the floods should not panic, as the Government is doing its best to channel all assistance to lessen the impact of the disaster.
He mentioned the assistance as relocation, medical and food aid so the victims do not experience worse plight. The assistance, according to Eugenio Laborinho, include the construction of dykes and replacement of pipes to drain the flood waters into non-inhabited zones.
He said a zone has already been designated to relocate the flood victims, adding the area is undergoing urbanisation works as each family will be allotted a plot to build their homes on. This is the third consecutive year Cunene province is hit by heavy floods, with the district of Cuvelai being this year's most affected zone, losing road connection with the capital city, Ondjiva.
So far, the floods have affected a total of 12,000 people. Of that number, 5,805 has been left without school, 400 agricultural fields destroyed and several houses washed away.
