Nigeria: Deeyah Berates Kangaroo Decisions

Abuja — A member of the House of Representatives, Emmanual Deeyah, has described as funny, distasteful and disgraceful the desperate moves to promote selfish interests leading to the disqualification of Sam Jaja from contesting the chairmanship of the Nigeria Premier League (NPL).

The Electoral Committee, chaired by Tony Rafua, had disqualified the former President of the Nigeria Referees Association (NRA) two weeks ago over alleged 'irregularities'.

Already Jaja is in Court to question the NPL electoral committee's disqualification of him, describing it as arbitrary, null and void and also querying the legality of the constitution of the electoral panel, which he said was done without due regard for Article 11(c) 2 of an NPL statute, which expressly recommend that the panel must have two lawyers of at least ten years experience.

Deeyah, who is also member of the House Committee on Sports, admitted that Jaja's petition had been received and assured that the committee's final outcome will serve the best interest of Nigerians and not that of groups of people.

Deeyah who said he was speaking as a Nigerian, a member of the federal house, a member of the house' sports committee and an indigene of Rivers State, added that the action of NPL "is like a drama from a cabal within a body.

"I am speaking based on what I read in the papers and not on behalf of the committee on sports. To me, I think we should consider that this country has gone beyond the level where few some individuals would sit down to decide the fate of others when they do not have the locus-standi to do so."
