Nigeria: NGO Trains Women in Conflict Resolution

A non-governmental organisation has trained its 36 states directors and co-ordinators on conflicts transformation, mediation and forgiveness during crisis situations.

The training took place during the annual state directors meeting held in Kaduna and participants were drawn from across the 36 states and Abuja under the national body of Women for Peace in Nigeria (WOPIN).

At the end of the three-day programme, the group has resolved to send delegations to Jos, Plateau State capital, as a result of the ethno-religious crises that have rocked the state.

Delivering a lecture at the meeting, Professor Harriett Nettles of the University of Maryland USA, who is also a US court appointed mediator, said the role of mediators in conflict resolution is very important.

She said while mediating, the mediator should be neutral, non-judgmental, transparent and assist the parties to create a better conversation among others.

Participants were taught the act of mediation practically and how to forgive one another in finding a lasting solution, should in case of severe and sharp disagreement between parties in conflict, particularly families and other disputes.

National president of WOPIN Hajiya Maryam Abdullahi said the organisation puts the family setting the first in every peace initiative.
