Eritrea: Taff Plantation Gaining Momentum in Forto-Sawa

Asmara — Taff plantation being cultivated through irrigation farming along the banks of the Sawa River is showing promising prospects, according to the farming community in the area.

The farmers explained that they are cultivating taff alongside other agricultural activities and that the task is bearing encouraging outcome.

Mr. Woldemichael Gebremeskel, a farmer in Forto-Sawa who took the initiative to cultivate taff in Gash-Barka region last year, said that the plantation has already reached the stage of harvesting and that he obtained about 14 quintals from one hectare last year. The plantation has been expanded to 45 hectares this year, he added.

Another farmer, Mr. Mohammed Arei Mussa who began engaging in taff cultivation stressed the benefit of taff cultivation as it does not require much water and extra efforts to grow.

The head of the Agriculture Ministry's branch in Forto-Sawa, Mr. Ogbe Gebreamlak, on his part expressed conviction that bumper harvest would be obtained from taff plantation this year as it has already been cultivated at the right time. He further explained that over 60 hectares of taff are presently under cultivation.
