Nigeria: Agabi Seeks Reform of Law Enforcement Agencies For Credible Polls

One time Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Kanu Agabi, on Wednesday called for reformation of law enforcement agencies in the country toward achieving credible elections in 2011.

Agabi said this in Abuja at the national conference for stakeholders in the electoral process. The three-day conference was organised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the forthcoming polls.

In his lecture entitled "Ensuring Effective Legal Framework for the Conduct of Elections in Nigeria", Agabi faulted the machinery of law enforcement, saying "it is weak and will need to be reformed".

Agabi said total emphasis on legal framework would be a misplaced one without reforming the law enforcement agencies.

"The military enforced law when they were in government and the police was undermined.

"The police force became weak naturally because for nearly 30 years law was enforced largely by the military and we must rehabilitate the police and the same to the EFCC and the ICPC," Agabi said.
