Kampala — Moses Kipsiro and Adero Nyakisi are some of the star athletes expected to compete in the annual Stanbic Bank-sponsored fun run due April 25 at International School of Uganda (ISU), Lubowa.
This year's race, in its ninth edition, was launched yesterday at Golf Course Hotel, Kampala. "Kipsiro visited us at ISU recently and promised to come back and run," Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) official Ronnie Kasirye said.
World cross-country silver medalist Kipsiro won last year's 10km run, striding home in 29 minutes 31.2 seconds. "Nyakisi, Annet Negesa and Kipsiro's training partner Simon Ayeko have also confirmed. That means we shall have very many elite runners on the day," Kasirye noted.
The ISU-Stanbic run is organised annually to raise funds for the underprivileged. Last year, close to 500 people participated, raising Shs30m. The money, with a bigger part coming from Stanbic Bank, went to Comprehensive Rehabilitation Services in Uganda (Corsu), Nakulabye Primary School and SOS Children's Village - Gulu.
Corsu used the funds for reconstructive surgery on over 29 disabled children while Nakulabye Primary installed electricity at their campus. This year's beneficiaries include Missionaries of the Poor, The African Children's Choir and St. Clare Girls High School.
Part of the proceeds will go to the ISU scholarship programme started last year at ISU. "Corsu by organising this race for charity purposes, we are demonstrating to our kids that we have a role to play in society," ISU principal Michael Lees said. Registration for individuals and corporate teams starts tomorrow.
