Abuja — Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Prince Adetokunbo Kayode (SAN) on Tuesday disagreed with the belief in some quarters that there is a collapse of faith in the Nigerian system saying that those who judge the country on American standard must know that, we are in Nigeria.
The AGF who gave this indication at an interactive session with the judiciary sector however acknowledged that the nation "is facing serious challenges" and that same cannot be translated to collapse of faith in the system.
He regretted that some Nigerians express their belief in the Nigerian project any time they come out victorious in the court while those who lose in court conclude that there is no faith in the system, a situation, he noted cannot pave way for the much desired feat being clamored for.
Meanwhile, Kayode has assured of his readiness to prosecute those fingered in the Boko Haram and Jos crisis adding that "we shall maintain zero tolerance for impunity and extra judicial killings and other forms of violations of human rights."
The ADF harped on the need to implement the Justice Uwais Electoral Reform proposals especially as it affects electoral reforms adding that "we will be in collaboration with the relevant agencies, media organizations and civil society, embark on the sensitization of electorates about electoral offences. We will encourage the prosecution of electoral offenders and collaborate with the Minister of Police Affairs for the training of the police to enhance their neutrality in future elections."
The minister also said that his administration would fully support the anti-graft agencies including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission and National Drug Law Enforcement Agencies so that purposes for establishing them would be better realized.
On the need to decongest the nation's prisons, the AGF disclosed that a committee has already been set up to carry out the crucial exercise just as he noted that there could not have been a better way of sanitizing the condition of inmates aside from prison decongestion for which he said that the Nigerian Bar Association would play a crucial role.
After the minister's address, various stakeholders represented at the meeting designed to intimate the minister with the activities of the justice sector geared towards the way forward, spoke their minds and proffered suggestions and advice.
Some of the demanded a more proactive approach towards tackling legal issues that tend to weight the nation down while others recommended a more regular interface and discourse between the various justice sector units with the AGF to ensure a more fruitful synergy that would improve human rights and social justice in Nigeria.
The meeting was graced by the President of Nigerian Bar Association, Directors General of the parastatals under the Federal Ministry of Justice including the Legal Aids Council, Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, NAPTIP, Nigeria Law Reforms among others.
