Lubango — The rains recorded in the southern Huíla Province from January 2009 to February 2010 caused the death of 13 people, injured six and left 9, 516 people homeless, ANGOP learnt from an official source.
The Civil Protection and Fire Department acting spokesman, Daniel Pires, stressed that the rains caused the flooding of 1, 586 houses and destruction of 1,000 hectares of cultivated land.
The source explained that the higher amount of downpour was recorded in the districts of Lubango, Chipindo, Caconda, Jamba, Matala, Chibia and Humpata, having also caused the fall of trees, obstruction of roads, destruction of cars and motorcycles.
Daniel Pires stressed that during that period, the strong winds that affected the districts of Lubango, Humpata and Kuvango, caused partial destruction of 92 houses, two schools, a church and two warehouses.
To ease the population's problems, the official stated that his institution is supplying food, building materials, among other goods.
