Tunisia: Donations to Local Medicine Bank Reach 1, 5 Million Dinars

Tunis — In order to provide the appropriate legal mechanisms for the Tunisian medicine bank to collect donations in kind and cash, a draft bill amending a previous law dated 1973, was examined on Tuesday by a cabinet meeting chaired by President Ben Ali.

In line with Tunisia's solidarity based policy, the aim of the bill is to entrench the national solidarity momentum through the distribution by the bank, of medicine to people in need. The medicine banks which was created on September 2, 2008, has recorded donations amounting to 1, 5 million dinars in 2009.

Apart from its reserves of medicines and medical equipment, the bank also boasts a nationwide computer network system. The bank's mobile teams provide free and regular health services to needy people especially among the elderly living in families or in care centers.
