Uganda: Special Constable Shoots Three Students in Bushenyi

Bushenyi — A police constable in Bushenyi District has been accused of shooting and injuring three students who were watching a football match.

The suspect attached to Kabwohe Police Station, allegedly shot Pison Atuhumuza, 19, Rowlings Nuwagaba, 16, both from Nganwa High School and a female student Anoline Ayesiga, 15, of Sheema Premier High School as they cheered on their colleagues at Kabwohe town council playground.

Recalling

Nuwagaba said he remembers a gunshot and blood profusely flowing from his leg.

"We were not rowdy at all. Our team had just won a match and we came jubilating to Kabwohe playground. As we approached the playground, I saw the police constable in a red uniform blocking us," Nuwagaba told Daily Monitor on Wednesday. We didn't intend to harm anyone because we had won the game and there was no intension of fighting."

Ayesiga and Nuwagaba are admitted in Ishaka Hospital. Acting DPC Bashir Siriba confirmed the incident but was unable to give details.

Parents' take

Rev. Can. Semu Muhumuza, the Archdeacon of Masheruka and father of Atuhumuza, told journalists at Ishaka Hospital that his son's leg is likely to be amputated because the impact of the bullet was big.

In the past, people have been complaining about police constables for being trigger-happy.

Last month, two students of Kaloke Christian High School in Nakaseke District were shot by an SPC, after they had camped outside the head teacher's office, protesting the poor conditions at the school.
