Nigeria: Alaba Excites Germany

Lagos — Nigerian-born David Olatokunbo Alaba is enjoying rave reviews in the German media after making his UEFA Champions League debut for Bayern Munich against Fiorentina.

The youngster, who has also enjoyed the privilege of being the youngest player to be capped by Austria, had his photographs dominating front pages of highly influential tabloids. A glimpse into the German media, reveals Germany have fallen in love with the 17-year-old

The Bild newspaper devoted it's own story on David Alaba thus: "An unusual role for the midfielder. He was filled with bravado and exhibited self-confidence remarkably. Alaba was one of the best Bayern players in Florence. He even had the most contact with the ball. Alaba did not hesitate to give his man in front (Ribéry) vociferously tactical instructions. "

On their part, the editors of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung said: "Alaba provided a decent game and deserve all the respect in the Champions League. The 17 years old Vienna with a Nigerian father and Filipino mother, enjoyed the full confidence of its Dutch coach and his teammates."

The Sueddeutsche commented also on the Nigerian qualities: "Alaba was so clarified that he would be here for years. He will receive a professional contract in late June, he is 18, will be next Midfielder Christoph Knasmüllner."

The Munich newspaper made an interesting observation: "Shortly before kick-off Rummenigge wanted to talk to Alaba. But he had his headphones on and no ear open for the CEO. Rummenigge appreciated it as cool, but when Alaba then finally took off his headphones, asked the boss again: "Are you nervous?" Alaba shook his head. "No, why?" Rummenigge irritated: "You can make history today!"

Summarizing Alaba's performance, The Rheinische Post added: "The starting XI debutants showed promising approaches, was very focused and showed a remarkable passport security, speed and inaugural battle strength. Towards the end of the game with a few wobbles, but it was a good debut in the Champions League."
