Nairobi — Five of Kenya's top six amateurs preparing for next week's Kenya Open will be in the Windsor Classic action at Windsor Golf Hotel and Country Club's par 72 course this weekend.
They are among a star field of 71 players drawn for this fourth leg in the 2010 Kenya Golf Union Golfer of the Year series.
The Goty comes barely a month after the Muthaiga Open where one of the most promising golfers in the country, Nelson Mudanyi formerly of Thika and now at Muthaiga, triumphed.
Leading the five, who are expected to be joined next week by USA-based Ganeev Giddie, will be South Africa-based Stefan Andersen, who last year around this time scored his first ever Goty victory at the same venue.
Andersen, no doubt the reigning amateur in the country, claimed the Kenya Amateur Strokeplay Championship.
That saw him score enough points to join the national team which has been preparing for the Africa Zone Six later on next month in addition to qualifying for the Open.
Others are Francis Kimani of Limuru, Boniface Simwa (Vet Lab), Sullivan Muthugia (Thika) and Muthaiga's Collins Omondi.
Draw for Sunday
Joining them will be, Mudanyi, new national team player Joseph Karanja (Golf Park), Ali Orende (Vet Lab) and Windsor's stars Farsheed and Nadeem Alibhai, who have been doing well in the Golf Talent Foundation Players Tournament.
Action starts with the first round at 7.30am on Saturday. The second round follows in the afternoon, after which the draw for Sunday will be done. The Windsor course, like the venue of the Open (Muthaiga), is challenging in every aspect. This weekend's tournament is therefore most useful for the top amateurs.
Down at the Coast, over 150 players from Nyali, Mombasa, Leisure Lodge, Malindi and Vipingo will be battling it out in the Tusker Malt Golf Carnival. This is the second regional final in the series where the top eight teams will qualify for the national finals at Muthaiga on May 21.
Among those vying for the eight slots will be the all-ladies team of Wambui Warui, Kellen Weku, Alice Wahome and Pai Swatton.
Others include the Munyao family - Patrick Munyao, his wife Diana and long-hitting son and Kenya international George Munyao - and top Coast amateur golfer Samuel Kahindi.
