FOR the second year running, the Harare Jazz Festival is set to be held on April 17 with a number of renowned musicians billed to perform.

According to the festival organisers, the likes of Hugh Masekela (pictured right), Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Sibongile Khumalo, Oliver Mtukudzi, Themba Mkhize, Cool Crooners, Mbare Trio, Jazz Invitation and an Italian group called Silvia Manco Quartet have already confirmed their participation.

The Harare Jazz Festival is an annual event that brings together prominent jazz artists and groups from across Zimbabwe and the region to foster the development and growth of jazz music in the country.

Festival director Bernie Bismark said this year's festival had grown bigger and better. She said Masekela was happy to come and perform in Zimbabwe.

"He is making a comeback to Zimbabwe after so many years and he is looking forward to visiting Zimbabwe, Bismark said. "He wants to connect with his fans and local musicians as well."

"We have noted that several jazz groups have not had the chance to perform with international artistes, and this show will present them with the opportunity.

This time around, the festival will be held at the Harare Sports Club grounds.

"It will set the tone for a relaxed, fun-filled atmosphere to allow movement, dancing and interaction," say the organisers.

Last year the festival was held at the Celebration Centre in Borrowdale and did not have the carnival effect that many had expected due to the formal surroundings.

Nevertheless, audiences were treated to unforgettable performances from the likes of Kunle Ayo, Judith Sephuma, Dudu Manhenga, Prudence Katomeni Mbofana, Ernie Smith, Kudzai Sevenzo and Rute Mbangwa amongst a host of other artists.
