Nigeria: Edo Elders Caution Oshiomhole On Impeached Speaker

Abuja — Edo Elders Consultative Forum (EECF) has commended the House of Representatives over its resolution in which it asked Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State to ensure reinstatement of the impeached Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Zakawanu Garuba.

The resolution which was unanimously adopted by the House of Representatives had warned Oshiomhole and his allies in the state House of Assembly against "political rascality".

Rising from an emergency meeting in Abuja at the weekend, presided over by its National Coordinator, Monday Okpebholo, the EECF believed that the process of Garuba's impeachment was unconstitutional and out of tune with current democratic tenets.

Okpebholo, who spoke to newsmen after the meeting, said the last week's court decision in Benin City to restore the seized vehicles and all paraphernalia of office to the former Speaker was a welcome development.

The EECF chief also said the group was disturbed that up till this moment the governor was yet to react to allegations that N25 billion loan had been secured by his administration with no specific projects tied to it.

He added that "the polarisation of the state through the policy of divide and rule has clearly indicated that the state is not Oshiomhole's constituency".

The elders forum further accused the governor of raising "a special militia", in the guise of vigilante group, in Edo State for use during the 2012 elections, saying such a development was "uncalled for and capable of turning the state to a battle ground of which Edo State was not known for".

The forum called on the governor to listen to well-meaning lovers of the state on how he could move the sate forward "instead of chasing perceived political enemies and wasting state funds on campaigns of calumny and sloganeering".
