Nigeria: NACA Launches N756 Billion National HIV And Aids Response

The National Agency for Control of AIDS (NACA) has launched a comprehensive National Strategic Framework (NSF) response for six years, which, if fully implemented, would require an estimated N756 billion to implement.

The NSF, which is made up of six thrust areas, comprising of prevention of new infection and behavioural change, treatment, care and support for those living with HIV & AIDS, policy advocacy, among others, is expected to provide at least 80 per cent of HIV positive pregnant mothers free access to treatment.

Speaking at the official presentation of NSF in Abuja, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, said "It is gratifying to note that 2010-15 framework is all inclusive and participatory and requires collective efforts from all states and 19 line ministries and government agencies.

"Federal Government will support full implementation in terms of funding and all implications involving the actualization of the new plan."

Director General, NACA, Prof. John Idoko, said the proposed was attainable befor 2015 with full support of States, local governments, ministries, donor agencies and international community.

He disclosed that 15 per sent of the amount in the last five years hasdcome form the public sector, government, and parastatals. "If we don't get the money we will look for areas of priorities. About 1,000 new infections are recorded every day in Nigeria. Prevention and treatment remains an important area to look into, if we will achieve the set goal by 2015," he said.

Elaborating on the new plan, Director of Policy and Strategy, NACA, Mr. Alex Ogundipe said that the expectation of the six-year plan was that it will be a veritable instrument for coordination and resources mobilization as well as monitoring the response.

"Over 60 million Nigerians will have access to treatment and counselling by 2015. Prevention from mother to child will move from 11 per cent to 30 per cent by end of 2010."
